Do you remember this scene from Disney’s Cinderella?
Gus, the mouse, goes to gather corn. And because he’s kind of a chunker (and maybe my spirit animal), he insists on grabbing more than he can really carry, which results in him spilling all of his corn, waking up the cat (who is named, interestingly enough, Lucifer) and nearly getting eaten. He lives, but I don’t remember if he ends up losing all his corn in the process or not. I was reminded of this scene this weekend when I was at the Liberty Science Center with my two year old. There’s this tube system where you can insert balls, and Elizabeth was insistent that she needed all of the balls, and she ended up looking like Gus and repeatedly spilling them all, then going to grab them again and horde them from the other kids rather than just enjoying putting the balls into the tubes one at a time.
And it made me think---how many times do we do this every day? Rather than trusting and appreciating the incredible abundance that God provides us with, we feel the need to grab on to that one more piece of whatever, and in the process make ourselves vulnerable to Lucifer’s clutches. So today, whatever you’re holding too much of, or trying desperately to grab more of---just drop it. Take what you need, trust that He will bring you more.
*But also this is in no way meant to discourage taking like 1-2 more desserts from whatever holiday party offerings are presented than is truly socially appropriate.
